The psychological reading

META/?/S

Jung's modern myth

Saucers as a sign of the times rather than a visit.

In 1958 Carl Jung published a short book arguing that flying saucers, whatever their physical basis, had become a modern myth: round, shining objects in the sky appearing at a time of nuclear fear, much like the mandalas he saw as symbols of wholeness. He did not say people were inventing them. He said the meaning people found in them came from within. Nearly everything in this guide that asks where a description came from, rather than whether it is true, descends from this book.

Keel's umbrella is the same idea pushed further. The warning-bearing Nordics of the 1950s are the clearest case of the anxiety Jung described.

META: outside the system

Origin code

Not a being to sit alongside the others. A framework that reframes the whole catalogue, a tradition that travelled in the opposite direction from the rest, or an intelligence people say they made rather than met.

Degree of embodiment: varies

Scale, 1 to 5

5 is an ordinary biological body. 4 is physical but manifests oddly. 3 comes and goes. 2 is energetic or subtle. 1 is consciousness with no persistent form. Note that this tends to fall as a tradition ages.

S: speculative hypothesis

Offered explicitly as a proposal rather than a report. Rare in this field, and worth noticing when it happens.
